From January to December 2021, the export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic was 1.826 million tons, compared with 2.1792 million tons in the same period last year, a year-on-year decrease of 16.20%. In 2021, the total export value of domestic fresh or refrigerated garlic is 12.111 billion yuan, and the export price per ton is 6,628 yuan/ton. In the same period last year, the export value was 13.371 billion yuan, and the export price per ton was 6,446 yuan/ton. The export price increased by 182 yuan/ton year on year, an increase of 2.82%.
Tight overseas shipping schedules and high sea freight are still the key factors restricting export volume. In March-April, the decentralization of Indonesia's quota may boost export demand. Indonesia is one of the main countries for China's garlic export. The amount of garlic exported to Indonesia accounts for about 40% of the annual garlic export volume.
In the domestic market, the price of garlic has continued to drop since the market opened in the first month. In half a month, the price of generally mixed grades in Jinxiang dropped by as much as 15%. Since the market opened in February, the price of cold-storage garlic in the Jinxiang production area has dropped, and the trading activity has not been as high as before. However, consumption in the terminal market is sluggish, domestic and foreign demand is flat, The price fell into a vicious circle, and the price of garlic in the cold storage kept falling.
According to the current garlic market, although cold storage garlic can still be sold until May and June, its market will still depend on the planting area of garlic and the level of output this year. As the garlic market rose slightly in the latter part of last year, it also stimulated garlic farmers to increase the planting area.
However, due to the heavy rain last year, the planting time of garlic was delayed by 20-30 days compared with previous years. The seedling condition after emergence was relatively poor compared with previous years, due to better weather factors after planting, the temperature is higher, which is conducive to the growth of garlic seedlings. Therefore, it is still difficult to make an accurate judgment on the garlic output this year.
