Kenya has started exporting frozen avocados to China, considering the conditions Beijing imposed before authorizing the import of the Kenyan fruit. According to the Horticulture Directorate, the first shipment arrived in China last month, after the agreement was signed almost a year and a half ago.
Kenya has been fighting to relax the rules, as most exporters do not necessarily have the infrastructure to freeze the fruit, delaying a seven-year effort to introduce Kenyan avocados to the Chinese market.
Businessdailyafrica.com reports that under the agreement reached in April 2019 between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, Kenya would only be able to export frozen avocado to control pests such as fruit flies, which have been common in Kenyan fruits.
